The first Doha Tribeca Film Festival officially kicked off with a spectacular red carpet ceremony at the Museum of Islamic Art.  International filmmakers, producers, actors and actresses from over 20 countries walked on a new LED red carpet laid out at the main entrance of the museum.  This was the first red carpet ceremony to take place in Qatar and it marks the beginning of a new era of creativity in filmmaking.

Prominent international actors such as Sir Ben Kingsley and Robert De Niro were the highlight of the opening ceremony capturing much of the attention of the media.  In addition, Egyptian movie stars Adel Imam, Layla Alwi and Yousra as well as the Turkish duo “Noor” and “Mohannad” made an appearance on the red carpet and waved to fans as they crossed.  Other actors, directors and producers from Qatar, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, France and other countries were also present.

Meanwhile, over 4000 people filled the specially constructed open-air theatre and were entertained by Qatari traditional dances before watching a screening of “Amelia” by Mira Nair.
Commenting on the importance of Doha Tribeca Film Festival, Mira Nair stated: “It is not only about bringing film and shattering borders between us, but it is also really about bringing film to the community and it is about educating the community to make their own films.”
Doha Tribeca Film Festival is scheduled to take place from 28 October to 1 November.  The Museum of Islamic Art is its major venue.
