Saturday 13 February, 2010 – Doha: Qatar Museums Authority took part in TED 2010 (Technology – Entertainment – Design), an annual event in Long Beach, California.  TED is an international convention that introduces new ideas in technology, offers innovative scientific solutions and unveils the latest ideas of individual specialists, corporations and foundations.  QMA was represented by Abdulla Al Najjar, CEO of Qatar Museums Authority; Roger Mandle, Executive Director of Qatar Museums Authority and Peggy Loar, Director of the National Museum of Qatar.

TED is known for launching creative ideas that usually have a significant impact on the daily lives of millions of people around the world.  Ideas such as how to use music and art to rehabilitate children, who have been victims of war, or developing new environmental-friendly technologies in architecture, are frequently discussed at TED.  In addition, TED often discusses ideas in art, culture, design and medicine.  This year’s convention is themed “what the world needs now” and among the participants: Sergey Brin from Google and Bill Gates from Microsoft and several executives from cultural institutions, museums, and various organizations involved in human development efforts.

At the convention, Qatar Museums Authority organized an event titled “Culture in the Heart of Qatar” to inform TED participants about the projects of the organization.  During which Abdulla Al Najjar, CEO of QMA elaborated on Qatar’s national vision and the efforts taking place to establish cultural institutions of excellence such as the Museum of Islamic Art, which has been successful over the past year in promoting education and culture in Qatar.  He also reminded the guests that Doha is the Arab capital of culture for 2010 and this is an opportunity to launch world-class initiatives.

Roger Mandle later spoke about the importance of establishing and maintaining strong relationships with worldwide museums to benefit from their experience.  He also stated that QMA is always seeking positive relations with world-renowned cultural institutions.  QMA’s event attracted many delegates who expressed their interest in its vision for the future.

QMA’s participation in international conferences is part of its plan to introduce cultural projects and museums in Qatar to the rest of the world.
