Museum of Islamic Art organizing several educational events, monthly talks and activities around “Pearls.”
Exhibition’s presenting partner is Al Fardan Jewellery.

A new temporary exhibition has been launched at the Museum of Islamic Art.  “Pearls” is a unique scientific, historical and cultural journey into the realm of pearls.  The launch of “Pearls” coincides with the beginning of Doha’s celebrations as capital of Arab culture for 2010.

The exhibition showcases over 300 artifacts and art works involving pearls and demonstrates how pearls are formed and their relationship with societies throughout history.  Along with the collection of Qatar Museums Authority, the exhibition has benefitted from the exquisite collection of its presenting partner Al Fardan Jewellery as well as lenders from around the world such as: British Museum, Albion Arts and Walter Elwood Museum.
Commenting on the significance of “Pearls” for the mission of the Museum of Islamic Art, Mr Abdulla Al Najjar, CEO of Qatar Museums Authority stated: “After a year of the establishment of the Museum of Islamic Art, we are proud to be achieving regional and international recognition as a cultural centre of excellence.  ‘Pearls’ is a tribute to the sacrifice of our forefathers who depended on exporting pearls to the rest of the world to sustain their economy.  We expect ‘Pearls’ to be a resounding success and I would like to invite everyone to come and visit.”
The exhibition is made up of seven sections, covering different aspects such as: pearl formation, importance of pearl diving in the history of the Arabian Gulf region and the influence of pearls on jewellery and design throughout history.  In addition, a special book offering a brilliant insight into the mysterious world of pearls has been published and is being sold at the museum’s gift shop.

To complement “Pearls,” the Education Centre at the Museum of Islamic Art will be holding special sessions including art workshops, lectures and seminars.  In addition, a workbook for children on pearls has been published to be handed out to children who visit the exhibition.

Admission to “Pearls” is 20 QR for adults and free for students and children under 16.
