Ferozkoh: Tradition & Continuity in Afghan Art

20 March – 22 June, 2013 MIA Temporary Exhibition Hall

A partnership between the Museum of Islamic Art and Turquoise Mountain’s Institute for Afghan Arts and Architecture in Kabul, Ferozkoh examines the preservation of traditional Islamic art, and the role that education plays in its transmission and translation. Works from the permanent MIA collection will be showcased alongside pieces created by Turquoise Mountain students in Afghanistan.

Hey'Ya: Arab Women in Sports

Hey'Ya celebrates Arab women in sports. Commissioned by QMA, the exhibition combines the photography of Brigitte Lacombe with short documentaries from her sister, Marian Lacombe. Originally displayed at Sotheby’s Gallery in London, it showcases more than 50 Arab sportswomen.

Arab Games Exhibition

5th October 2011 - 1st December 2011 QMA Gallery

Demonstrating a chronological narrative of the Games, the exhibition will feature items from the games, including medals, posters, programs, films and interviews of athletes, photographs, and educational activities that inform visitors about the history of the Arab Games, which first took place in Alexandria, Egypt, back in 1953.


         

Takashi Murakami - EGO Exhibition

Take a journey into Japanese pop culture with one of the most prolific contemporary artists of our time. EGO - Takashi Murakami's first ever exhibit in the Middle East – is an interactive installation featuring circus tents, indoor cinemas, statues, paintings, and multimedia displays

Louise Bourgeois: Conscious and Unconscious

20th January – 1st June, 2012 QMA Gallery, Katara

Louise Bourgeois is one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. Conscious and Unconscious is the first in-depth study of her work to be exhibited in the Middle East, and showcases 32 pieces spanning sculptures, installation works, gouaches, and fabric pieces dating from 1947 to 2009.

Gifts of the Sultan

21st March – 2nd June Museum of Islamic Art – temporary collection

Gifts of the Sultan: The Arts of Giving at the Islamic Courts is a major international exhibition exploring Islamic art through the universal act of gift giving. Divided between personal gifts, pious donations and diplomatic offerings, the exhibit features over 200 items from the eighth century to the present.

Olympics Through Media

4 July - 9 September Katara, Building 10, QMA Gallery

The Olympics Through Media exhibition explores the way in which the modern Olympics and motion pictures grew up in parallel throughout the 20th century. From the Berlin Games in 1936 to Ben Johnson in 1988, the exhibit gives the local community a chance to learn about the development of the games, via interactive displays, videos and imagery.

Mal Lawal

 

 

12 September – 11 October 2012 ALRIWAQ DOHA Exhibition Space Mal Lawal: meaning from the “old days” in the Qatari dialect, is sponsored by Occidental Petroleum of Qatar and is the first exhibition celebrating the private collections that exist within Qatar. Qatar Museums Authority invites all Qatari nationals and residents to exhibit their private collections of objects that are of historical, personal or cultural value to them.

1001 Inventions

 

17 Oct - 12 Nov 2012 Museum of Islamic Art Park 1001 Inventions looks at the Golden Age of Muslim civilisation and the scientific innovations that took place. Covering the 1000 year period between the 7th and 17th century, the exhibition utilises interactive displays to show how Middle Eastern technology, science, and medical practices paved the way for contemporary society.

1 August – 7 January 2013 Museum of Islamic Art Glass is often misunderstood, underrated, or simply disregarded. The Early Islamic Glass exhibition tells a different story. Divided into two distinct showcases, the exhibit looks at both the artistry behind glasswork and the symbolism of mosque lamps.

Yan Pei-Ming

12 October – 12 January 2013 QMA Gallery, Katara

Curated by Francesco Bonami, this exhibition profiles three types of history-makers and highlights the power of painting as a medium for recording historical events and portraying iconic figures. Yan Pei-Ming is a world-renowned artist who became known for his "epic-sized" portraits of Chinese communist leader Mao Zedong, and actor Bruce Lee.

Arabick Roots

17 Oct - 19 January 2013 Museum of Islamic Art The Arabick Roots exhibition explains how scientific, cultural, and medical breakthroughs from the Middle East were exported to the western world and the enormous impact they had on 17th century society. From inoculation and astrolabes to the introduction of coffee; this is a wide ranging view of the ‘Arabick’ contribution to the modern world.

Art of Travel

The Art of Travel exhibition introduces visitors to the story of Bartholomäus Schachman – a Polish mayor who travelled throughout the Ottoman Empire during the 16th century. 100 watercolor miniatures painted during his travels take visitors on a journey through Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East, highlight the people, places, and customs he encountered.

The Orientalist Museum invites you to experience the Heritage of Art Diplomacy - A spectacular new exhibition showcasing 17th century paintings commissioned by the Habsburg ambassador von Kuefstein after his diplomatic mission to Istanbul. Tea With Nefertiti

Using the rich context of Egypt as a case study, this exhibition looks at the journeys that artworks make over time and place. Antiques, modernist artworks, and archival documents - alongside the work of 26 international contemporary artists - provide an opportunity to question the perception of art, artists, and institutions in and from the Arab World.
